Vintage, Vinyl, and ART.

In correlation with Retromended’s returning event, RES-UR-ECT, Twelve21 Gallery will open it’s doors Saturday, May 25th from 3 -7p.

Our crazy cool owners over at Laughing Samurai have had an extra busy couple of months, leaving “Superimpose” up on gallery walls longer than a typical show. Thankfully, this extension gives you yet another opportunity to check out […and purchase] works from this awesome group show featuring: Weston Jandacka (Seattle), Brian Phillips (Orlando) and Victor Perez (Gainesville)!

Just downstairs in the courtyard, Retromended Vintage will be holding their second RES-UR-ECT event (yes, the first one, last month, went THAT WELL!) This event will include tons of vintage clothing, vinyl records, music by The Lazy Afternoon and…free drinks!

Retromended

Start at Retromended and work your way upstairs or start at Twelve21 and work your way downstairs. Either way, pen-us-in NOW for Saturday, May 25th.

A COUPLE OF NOTES

- We are located directly across from Lake Ivanhoe (on N. Orange Ave). Twelve21 is upstairs (above Tim’s Wine Market) and Retromended is….well, just follow the tunes!

- Both locations are open to the public, 100% free to attend and 90% family friendly.

- You may bring your drinks up to Twelve21, but you may NOT leave them here.

- If you your going to come and JUST drink free booze, at least pretend to admire vintage clothing and contemporary art. No one likes an obvious party crasher!

Superimpose Opens Februrary 1st

We’ve already decided that 2013 is going to be a great year for art. More specifically, a great year for Twelve21 Gallery. While local is our core – we welcome national artists to share their works with the Orlando art lovin’ community as well. Our first show of the year, Superimpose, has BOTH! A familiar face at Twelve21 and local artist, Brian Phillips, will be exhibiting new works for this show, accompanied by Gainesville artist, Victor Perez and Weston Jandacka of Seattle, WA. These are three artists have worked hard to create amazing works for this show, and it’s definitely one you’re going to want to see in-person.

The opening reception will be held on Friday, February 1st from 7p – 10p. These things aren’t exclusive. While members of the art community are often present in our gallery during these events, anyone and everyone is welcome to come up (yes, there are stairs), grab a drink (beer and wine “on the house”), and peruse (and buy) awesome art by awesome artists. Stay the whole time or just drop by – we promise you’ll be glad you did.

“Where’s Your 21?” – Contest Results

While the response to our “Where’s Your 21?” Photo Contest was less overwhelming than we anticipated, we did get some quality submissions. As promised, we’re bringing you a blog post to showcase the fine works that we received. For those unfamiliar with the contest, users were first encouraged to use gain possession of a 21 sticker (don’t worry, we were helpful in this endeavor). That sticker was to be placed somewhere. Anywhere really. The most creative placement becomes the proud new owner of Brandon McLean’s “Keep Going” Print – as seen here.

So, here’s how it all turned out –

The Candidates:

The Finalists:

The Winner (top-voted): Jared Akers

Team Choice Winner: Angela Cox

Congratulations to Jared and Angela- and a huge thanks to all of our participants.

Keep your eye on our Facebook Page. More contests to come.

“Where’s Your 21?” – Photo Contest!

Hopefully you’ve heard by now that we launched a photo contest “Where’s Your 21?” on our Facebook this morning!

THE RUN DOWN

At each of our art openings, you can find an abundance of Twelve21 Gallery stickers up for grabs. We know you’re taking them, plenty of them, as there are fewer and fewer each show. But, the question is, what are you doing with them once they are in your pocket and taxi’d home with you. Please don’t say they’re in the washing machine.

In order to identify where you placed your 21 sticker, we decided to run a little contest that challenges your creativity and encourages you to make use of the 5 extra you jammed in your sock drawer.

OH, AND THERE ARE PRIZES

The photo with the most votes at the end of the week will be [figuratively] crowned the winner and will receive a Brandon McLean ‘KEEP GOING’ Print

Outside of the voting process, we will choose a Twelve21 Team Favorite. The winner of our selected photo will receive 15% off a select piece in our current exhibition, “Unmasked,” featuring local mixed-media artist Chris Tobar.

The winning photos, along with featured favorites will be shared here, on the blog for the entire universe to view!

HOW TO GET STICKERS

Swing by and grab stickers, email us your mailing address, or locate those ones you’ve been holding onto. – Submissions for the photo contests ends Monday, Aug. 20. So, dont waste any time!

Chris Tobar – “Unmasked” at Twelve21 Gallery

Twelve21 is back at it again, this time with our 17th gallery show featuring local artist, Chris ‘Tobar’ Rodriguez.

Catch a sneak peek of Tobar’s process and work in this video
[created by Laughing Samurai]

About the Artist

Born and raised in Chicago, Tobar began drawing at the age of 5, often sitting in a local comic book shop for inspiration. At the age of 12, he attended the Art Institute, the youngest person in most of his classes. In 2005, he moved to Florida to obtain a degree in Digital Art and Design from Full Sail University, where he developed his love of type, color, and expression. Tobar’s ambitious personality has helped define him as a graphic designer, co-founder of both B-side Artists and InProgress Magazine, and a talented mixed-media artist. Tobar’s past work features The Man in The Mask, a comic book inspired alter ego whose face is hidden by a gas mask. “The idea of it is for me to be myself, I would have to filter out all the B.S. and other unwanted troubles in life,” he says. “In the end, it’s just a mask. Just like a brand I stand behind it.”

About the Show

This new exhibition, “Unmasked,” represents a transitory phase for the artist, as he introduces a realm of new characters and inspirations while continuing the story that his work has previously built. The pieces in this show incorporate digital design, character illustration, stencil, spray paint, acrylic, and wallpaper paste to create urban-inspired, thought provoking works.

Join us Friday, August 17th from 7-10p for an opening reception with Chris Tobar himself. Beverages will be provided courtesy of Laughing Samurai and Tim’s Wine.

While you’re at it, join us Facebook style as well.
