About the Artist

Born and raised in Chicago, Tobar began drawing at the age of 5, often sitting in a local comic book shop for inspiration. At the age of 12, he attended the Art Institute, the youngest person in most of his classes. In 2005, he moved to Florida to obtain a degree in Digital Art and Design from Full Sail University, where he developed his love of type, color, and expression. Tobar’s ambitious personality has helped define him as a graphic designer, co-founder of both B-side Artists and InProgress Magazine, and a talented mixed-media artist. Tobar’s past work features The Man in The Mask, a comic book inspired alter ego whose face is hidden by a gas mask. “The idea of it is for me to be myself, I would have to filter out all the B.S. and other unwanted troubles in life,” he says. “In the end, it’s just a mask. Just like a brand I stand behind it.”

About the Show

This new exhibition, “Unmasked,” represents a transitory phase for the artist, as he introduces a realm of new characters and inspirations while continuing the story that his work has previously built. The pieces in this show incorporate digital design, character illustration, stencil, spray paint, acrylic, and wallpaper paste to create urban-inspired, thought provoking works.

Join us Friday, August 17th from 7-10p for an opening reception with Chris Tobar himself. Beverages will be provided courtesy of Laughing Samurai and Tim’s Wine.
